Chore Badges

I did not come up with this idea on my own. Mine is the make-do version based slightly on her idea.

If you would like to get the original go to Titus 2. They have a lot of great resources. I highly recommend their schedule book as well.

Anyway...

Yesterday I used some old name tag holders to make chore badges. We have the same morning chores all the time but because we each start and finish breakfast at different times, we're at differents stages during the first part of our morning. So I often have to keep someone on track. I've tried charts but don't like having to use the ink to print them off each week or to check them.
These hang around their necks first thing in the morning. When they are completed they must hang on their door until the next morning.
Of course, for the younger two who can't read yet, I drew pictures.
This morning was the first day and it went great. I kept hearing Iris (4) going over what all she needed to do.
What do morning chores consist of in the Wagner home?

Also, each child has a day of the week that is theirs. This day doesn't change. Monday is Charlie, Tuesday is Gray, Wednesday is Iris, Thursday is Jay and Friday is Emma. So I also have another list that they will use to remind them of the things they get to do on that day. Here is that list (sorry no pic):

Bring down the laundry / Feed Goldie (fish) / Pass out Juice Plus / Pick what to watch during TV time / One-on-one time with Mommy / Get the mail / Sit by Daddy at dinner

Still Here

I'm still here. We were on vacation last week and coming back I've jumped into my summer 'to do' list!

Here are some book recommendations for you:

Family Driven Faith by Voddie Baucham. I posted a couple of things about this book a while back. It has challenged me and changed my perspective greatly!

So Much More by Anna Sophia and Elizabeth Botkin. I'm not finished with this one yet, but it also has challenged my thinking, especially when it comes being a daughter of the King.

Happy Birthday, Jackson!!

Today is Jackson's 7th birthday!
What a special surprise he was to us! We had said we would wait a few years before we had more children - if we had more. Thankfully God had other plans.

Jackson - nicknamed Jay by his big brother - was born 7 years ago on my Dad's 60th birthday.

So let the birthday bragging begin...

He is such an awesome kid. About a year and a half ago he passed his older brother in height but never rubs it in.

He's very sweet and kind. He loves little kids. If there is a much younger cousin or friend over, he just gravitates towards them. He wants to read to them, entertain them, help them.

He loves to help. I have actually had to teach him to ask his little brother and sister if they want help before giving it because he just always wants to help them.

He sees the needs of others. Several times he has seen people on the side of the road and asked if we should pick them up or help them. One time when we were riding our bikes home from the park he noticed a neighbor (doesn't even know him) carrying some branches he had just cut from his palm tree. Jay asked if we should stop and help him.
He's a math genius! When he was in Kindergarten I was quizzing Gray (who was in 1st) on some math facts. Jackson would chime in with the answer. So this year for 1st grade we worked quickly through his Abeka 2nd grade math and then started Saxon's 4th grade math. It's just the way God made him but he cracks me up sometimes at how quickly he figures things out.

He's repentent. Often he has come to our room at night to confess something. He says he just can't sleep until he tells us.
He's an extrovert, friendly and a talker. I used to wonder what in the world he told his Sunday school teachers.

When Roddy's aunt and uncle came to visit last year, I wondered if the kids we're going to be shy and quiet. I don't think they were in the door 5 minutes when Jackson asked them to play a card game with him.

And 3 years ago when my brother was getting married he filled in as ring bearer when Gray (who is introverted) backed out! Thankfully he was on his way to catching up to his big brother in height and almost fit into the already rented tux.
He's loving. He never fails to come in and hug me in the morning. He always wants to sit by me in church. He says it's just because he loves me.

And he loves Jesus - which is most important.
Jackson Mark, we love you so much and are so thankful God gave you to us! Thank you for reminding us of our need to look out for others. We love your smile and giggle. You're a special boy and you're going to be an awesome father some day!

Happy Birthday!

Chicago

Wow! Chicago is beautiful this time of year! Pink trees, white trees, purple trees. Tulips everywhere - especially downtown. They filled the medians and sidewalks.

After Roddy picked me up from the airport Thursday afternoon and took my luggage to the hotel, we headed out to see the Windy City (they don't call it that for nothin').

First stop, a gorgeous park across the street from Lake Michigan. This is a view from the park of downtown and the Sears Tower.

We only had enough change to park for an hour so we headed over to the Sears Tower - the tallest structure in the Western hemisphere. Here are pictures from below and from the 99th floor!

The view from the Tower of the park and Lake Michigan.
The architecture downtown is beautiful. I told Roddy I could definitely live there. Then he reminded me of the winters and I said, "Never mind!"

Yikes!

A storm blew up yesterday. This gazebo used to be on the porch in front of the sliding glass doors to the right! The wind caught the top and twisted it in front of the kitchen windows.Notice the chair (center) on TOP of the flower pot. I don't know how that happened. It's a heavy chair!

Note to self: Nail down gazebo!

Beach Trip

Before I post our Chicago trip I want to get some pictures posted of our Spring Break in New Smyrna with Tiffanie and Preston and their boys.

Thursday the moms and kids headed over. The dads joined us Friday afternoon.

Hanging out on top the Excursion.Iris, Day 2, zonked out...Getting ready to take a walk Friday night...
Here's the surf instructor aka Roddy.

Iris stuck with boogie boarding. The dads got the kids started on a dad-sized sandcastle.
The kids had a blast. We got nice and tan...and exhausted. Lots of fun memories were made, though!!

Today's the Day

Roddy and I are on our way to get breakfast in Chicago before driving over to Indiana for Roddy's reversal appointment (2:30 pm).

When we get home I'll post pics of this beautiful city.

UPDATE:

We're back at the hotel watching the Magic game. What a day!

Dr. Streeter was so great! He talked with us first and told us what would be involved. Roddy tried to tune him out - he really didn't want to know what would be happening to him. I was very emotional, so I was trying to hold back tears the whole time.

The actual surgery took maybe 30-40 minutes and I got to sit in. When he gave Roddy the local anesthesia it really hurt - like he had been kicked really hard. Seeing him hurting so badly made me cry! At the same time the Dr. asked me a question and I couldn't answer. Roddy realized I was crying and answered for me. I now know why women are the ones to give birth - and not because Roddy was by any means wimpy about the whole thing but - because I hated to see him in pain.

When we got in the car I told Roddy I felt such a relief. We had finally made things right. What a peace!

Thanks for praying!!

What If?

What if we lived what we say we believe?

Now think about this:

What do you believe?

About God? The Bible? Your life and purpose?

Do you believe God is in control? Do you believe He is all-knowing? Do you believe He wants what is best for you? Do you believe He is all you need?

Do you believe everything in the Bible is true? And that there may be things you don't understand (don't make sense to you) but that His Word never contradicts itself?

Do you believe your life is your own? Do you believe you have purpose?

Ponder these questions...more to come.

Recession?

Has the "recession" affected you? Before you answer, check this out first...

After The Storm

We had quite a stormy morning two weeks ago. Roddy called to let me know there was a tornado warning in effect in our area. It got really dark with lots of rain and wind. Our friends a few miles away even had hail.

Well that night, we had the most beautiful sunset. Here is what I tried to capture from a second-story window.
Doesn't God just show us the most beautiful things after a storm?

Easter Pics - Finally

I'm behind on posting - big time!

Here are pictures of us all dressed up for Easter. We took this picture with the camera balanced on a tipped-over cooler (hence the large green space above our heads). The girls dresses were made from a bedskirt I bought at a garage sale. My mom did her magic and voila! out came Easter dresses. Roddy surprised the boys and me the Friday before with new clothes. I love the dress he bought me.Here are our kids having fun with their cousins...

First Snake of the Season

During lunch the other day I looked out the window and noticed this guy climbing up the ligustrum tree just outside the kitchen window. While he rested across the top of it, Emma distracted him on one side and I grabbed him from the other. He actually tagged my right arm but didn't hold on.
Striking the side of the aquarium that we kept him in for a couple of days... Black racers aren't the most friendly snakes.

Birding Field Trip

A few weeks ago Karen set up a fun field trip/science class for us at Langford Park. We had a lesson on birds and birding before taking a nature walk.

After lunch Karen pulled out some homemade play-doh and the kids got to construct nests.

Here is Jackson's precise nest...

On the way home I heard a loud noise. I thought it might be one of the tires but when I rolled down the windows to listen, I didn't hear it flopping and the car wasn't riding rough. I pulled off the toll road to look for a gas station (running on empty) and while sitting at the light the tire must have lost all it's air because when the light turned green it felt like the power steering was out. Roddy, my parents and his parents were all out of town. All my friend's hubby's were working so I was stuck. Finally a nice man came to our rescue and put the spare on for me.

Hallelujah!!

YEA!! We have our appointment set for Roddy's reversal! May 8th is the date ~ just 3 weeks from tomorrow!

I'm claiming this verse from Hebrews 11:11:

By faith Sarah herself received power to conceive...since she considered Him faithful who had promised.

A Very Happy Easter!

This was probably the best Easter I've ever had. Probably because it's the first year I was really focused on Jesus and what He did for me.

Last week we did a play-by-play with the kids of the events that occurred from Jesus' triumphal entry to his resurrection Sunday morning. For example, Thursday morning I talked with them at breakfast about how when Jesus woke up that morning He knew what was coming that night.

Each day we read Scripture that went along with the events of the day - sometimes right at the time they occurred. Like at noon on Friday I read the verses about it becoming dark for 3 hours. We stopped and thanked God for Jesus dying for our sins.

At night, we even acted out the day's events with little paper puppets we made of all the characters.
By Saturday night I was so excited about Sunday morning. The celebration of Jesus' resurrection was so real and exciting! All day yesterday I would say, "He is risen!" and the kids would chorus, "He is risen indeed!"

It was truly a very happy Easter!!

He Loves Us!

Yesterday morning about 2000 years ago, Jesus woke from His last night's sleep on earth.

I wonder what His first thoughts were. He knew what was coming when night fell.

But He loves us. So He endured it.

All night, he was questioned, mocked, beaten, slandered.

But He loves us. So He endured it.

I imagine this morning he was exhausted, famished, only to be subjected to more cruelty; more beating; more scourging; more hate.

But He loves us. So He endured it.

He was beaten beyond recognition. He carried a cross - our cross - physically weighing about 170 pounds, spiritually and emotionally weighing far more.
But He loves us. So He endured it.

Stakes were driven through skin and muscle, scraping bones, holding Him to our cross. More mocking, slander, hate.

But He loves us! So He endured it.

"Father forgive them!" He cried.

He loves us. He died for us! He gave everything! His life for ours.

One of Our Parenting Journeys

This may be more than you ever wanted to know about us. But here goes...

Thirteen years ago when Roddy and I got married, I said I never wanted to have children! I was adamant. People would tell me I would change my mind and that made me more adamant. The only reason I would consider having them is so that if something ever happened to Roddy, I would have a little bit of him with me.

I viewed children and teens as unruly and disobedient and had no intention of subjecting myself to that. One day at lunch I asked my mom if she would be upset if I went ahead and had my tubes tied.

Obviously, God changed my heart. Starting around our 3rd anniversary we would go back and forth saying, "We're ready. We won't prevent and just see what happens." or "What are we crazy!? We're not ready, yet."

A few months later, our friends who were trying to get pregnant through fertility treatments talked us into 'trying'. Four weeks later I woke up nauseous for my first doctor appointment. When I had a sonogram a couple months later I found out I was a month further along. So when we thought we were trying, I was actually pregnant.

Because Emma was such a good baby we didn't even discuss it but decided we didn't care if we got pregnant again. So when Emma was 16 months old, Gray was born.

We decided we would wait a few years and maybe have 2 more. "The plans of mice and men!!"

Surprise! And Jackson was born when Gray was 15 months old. I always wanted an even number so we tried for Charlie. Jackson was 16 months old when Charlie was born and Emma was not yet 4.

So 4 children in less than 4 years!

When Charlie was 7 or 8 months old we started talking about Roddy getting a vasectomy. Our reasons were that we wanted to be able to go on missions trips with the kids some day. And if I'm always pregnant and/or nursing, I wouldn't be able to do that. I also just didn't think I could have another baby and if we didn't do something, I was sure to get pregnant.

We made our decision with the stipulation that if we changed our minds and wanted more, we'd just have the vasectomy reversed. No big deal, right? I was only 29. We had plenty of time to have more. One thing I didn't know was that reversals are NOT covered by insurance!

So we scheduled the surgery. When Roddy was called back and I was left in the waiting room, I started crying thinking, "We're not going to change our minds and I'm not going to get to have anymore children."

On the way home, we stopped at the store to get Roddy's pain meds and I picked up a pregnancy test. I had been teasing Roddy that I had gotten pregnant 2 weeks before and had asked him to pick up a test for me. He kept forgetting. So as he was in line checking out, I took out one of the tests and ran in the bathroom.

That's when I found out I was pregnant with Iris! Praise the Lord! I was so excited even though I had said I just couldn't have anymore right then. Well guess what? I did have another one and it was great.

For a time I felt satisfied with the size of our family. The desire to have more would come and go but mostly I was content. Until Iris was 2, that is. Then I was ready for more. Roddy wasn't. So I prayed and prayed that God would take the desire away. He did some of the time. But it kept coming back.

I didn't want to nag Roddy about it because I know that when I don't submit to his decisions things don't go well. Instead I prayed that God would talk to Roddy. If God wanted us to have more, I prayed that He would prompt him to talk to me about it.

In the last year, we started talking about adopting. We both thought it would be great to adopt a sibling group. We didn't care what size or race or where they were from but did want to wait until Iris was a little older. At our Missionsfest event at the end of February, I stopped at the Florida Baptist Children's Home table. I got some information and then while we ate dinner, talked with Roddy about starting the process. He was all for it, thinking it would take a couple years to get through it all and that would be perfect timing.

That night as we talked about it, it hit me that this meant I would not be having anymore of my own children. I grieved and cried myself to sleep.

I don't know how we got on the topic the next night but during our talk I was able to tell Roddy all the things I had been thinking and praying for the last 2 years (since he told me he wasn't ready to have a reversal). I cried again.

The next morning I came downstairs into the kitchen and out of nowhere, Roddy said, "I can't think of a biblical reason not to have more." I was a little shocked. To clarify before I got too excited I asked, "Does that mean you're getting a reversal?"

"I guess so," was his reply.

Trying to retain some composure I coolly asked if I could go ahead and do some research for him for a doctor and if I could tell Cece. He said I could and I told him I'd have an appointment by the time he got to work! (I said I tried to retain some composure!)

We decided on a doctor in Indiana. He was recommended by someone who had a successful reversal done by him and because he's an advocate for families, he charges a fraction of the cost that others charge.

We are hoping to find out this week if we can get an appointment for May.

When I told my parents, my dad said, "So does this mean your going to be like that Duggar lady?" I laughed and said, "No. She's way ahead of me." Not to mention the fact that I've wasted 4 years because of the stupid vasectomy decision.

I don't know what's going to happen - if the reversal will even work. I'm praying hard that it will. And I don't know if it does, if God will give us more children. At this point, we are open to letting Him finally have control of our family size.

So there you go. The good, the bad and the more-than-you-ever-wanted-to-know about one of our parenting journeys.

Sometimes a Girl's Just Gotta Cry

"Sometimes a girl's just gotta cry." That's what I told Roddy this morning.

I was going to climb into the tub to look out the bathroom windows to check for rain when I slammed my kneecap into the top edge of the tile covering the tub. I've done it before but never this hard. Roddy tried to make a joke saying, "That's going to leave a mark!" Normally, very funny. But I was in a lot of pain. So not so funny today.

I'm not normally a cryer. Although, I will admit since becoming a mother, I totally understand why people cry at Hallmark commercials. But sometimes, when my hormones don't make me cranky, they make me weepy. Add guilt to that and you've got a waterfall waiting to happen.

A couple of things yesterday were weighing on my mind still this morning and after hitting my knee so hard I just started crying. I couldn't help it. Poor Roddy. Probably felt bad for trying to be funny. I finally stopped and as soon as I was done I felt so much better!!

So, sometimes a girl's just gotta cry.
